The young men of the American College system are among the most astute and upstanding members in society today. Their contributions to charity, their behavior in public and the image of themselves that they have crafted in our hearts and minds, speaks for itself. The wisdom that these men have, along with their youth and experience in life is a “perfect storm” of morality and sound decision making in today’s society. It’s no surprise that all presidents in U.S. history were once young college men. That is what makes this week’s events so shocking.
Similar to the events of 9-11 and the Kennedy assassination, all Americans this week learned that there was a fraternity chapter, in this great country, that objectifies women. I’m sure you also remember where you were when you learned about this. That’s right! There is a group of teenage men, in America, that think of sex often and when they do, they think of women.
At Old Dominion University this week, the Sigma Nu fraternity chapter decorated their house with signs that read “Is your daughter ready for college?’ Another read, “Daughter drop-off” with an arrow pointing to the front door of the building. A third sign read “… and leave mom also.”
Upon learning about this, the University’s president immediately suspended the fraternity and their national charter soon followed suit. The University released the following statement,
“This University, and its proud history of moral direction, has suspended this organization, for exercising its constitutional rights. ” The university went on to say, “Old Dominion University, along with Old Dominion Freight Lines, would like to apologize for the actions of these men. We are an educational institution that prepares young people for the real world. This week, some of our female students found out that some men are only interested in sex. This runs contrary to the reality of this world, where all sexual activity is had within the confines of a committed relationship and all children are born into a married and monogamous family.”
A spokesman for the National office of Sigma Nu said, “This behavior has no place in today’s society. If we condone these actions, next thing you know, rap songs will be littered with the word “Ho” and “Bitch.” Movies will have gratuitous nudity. Politicians will have extra-marital affairs, and so on!” He went on to say, “Let’s hope this sort of depravity doesn’t make it’s way to Hollywood, or the recording industry in general.”
To be clear, there was no: sexual assault at this fraternity house, there were no racist activities, there was not a near-death from binge drinking, no violence, nor were there any other infractions that typically only result in an investigation and fine. Three signs were made on private property and the University had no other option than to go Nuclear.
Old Dominion Freight Lines, who purchased the naming rights to the University in 1987, also fired four truck drivers this week, for having sex with prostitutes at various truck stops, testing positive for narcotics and possessing mud flaps with a chrome silhouette of a nude women.
